What does a Clinical Nutritionist do?

Effective yet realistic dietary changes

How can I help you?

Many people come to me saying that they’re coping but don’t feel their best or that their symptoms have reached the point where they’re impacting on their daily life at home, at work and socially.

Many of you will be eating healthily, but are frustrated that your old methods aren’t working. Some of you may have a new medical diagnosis and need specific dietary support. Maybe you have no idea what to eat but are sick of feeling less than 100%. I meet you where you are.

There are so many reasons why patients work with Clinical Nutritionists, and I see patients of all ages with a wide range of conditions. Insulin resistance diets, weight loss programs, diets for energy, Metabolic diet plans and nutrition coaching offer a truly holistic nutrition approach.

Are you struggling with these common health conditions? Click for more information on how I treat these!

  • No one likes to talk about their guts, but proper digestion underpins good health. Stool tests and SIBO breath tests is a key part of my practice to understand how your gut microbiome is affecting your overall health.

Bloating, food sensitivities, heartburn, constipation and diarrhoea are not ‘normal’ and can be addressed through functional testing and dietary changes. IBS and SIBO is a particular area of clinical interest and I have developed a bespoke diet program to tackle this common condition - see the next tab ‘Banish the Bloat’

  • Weight gain and low energy are often the side effect of unbalanced hormones or gut bacteria, so I will always investigate the root cause.

I primarily work with the Metabolic Balance® method in these cases using real food to rebalance the hormones commonly involved in weight gain - insulin, cortisol and female hormones.

You will learn long term eating habits designed around you - while avoiding hunger, pills and diet shakes!

  • Life after 40 brings significant hormone changes which can result in weight gain, insomnia, hot flushes and brain fog amongst others. Learning how to alter dietary habits for this life stage can be highly effective in managing symptoms

The Metabolic Balance® method works beautifully here to rebalance your hormones and give you long term great health habits as well as kickstart long term weight loss

  • Autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease and arthritis have a common root cause. By identifying and assessing this, we can improve symptoms, learn better coping strategies and reduce the frequency and intensity of flare ups. As a holistic nutritionist, I will work with diet plans and personal coaching for long term good health

The question I’m most frequently asked is, “What is a nutritionist?” And it’s a good question.

Put simply, I work with you to improve your health. The most important thing I can do when I first meet a client is to listen to them. I’ll ask about their symptoms, their lifestyle and what they want to achieve.

Exploring further, I’ll unravel all the issues at play to find the root cause of the problem. My aim with every client is to treat the cause not the symptoms. Seeing my patients one-to-one, either in person or online, we build a collaborative partnership over several months to address your health concerns, relieve your symptoms but ultimately working to restore the body to better health. The dietary and lifestyle changes can be as dramatic or as gentle as you wish. Many of my patients prefer a step-by-step approach to build a long term understanding of how different food affects their body’s functions. Others are ready to make significant shifts to address challenging or chronic symptoms. I work with you, at your pace to reach your health goals.

Registered Clinical Nutritionists have spent a minimum of three years at university studying the biochemistry behind disorders in the body, combined with practical clinical experience. Using the latest research and functional testing, I examine the nutritional imbalances that are contributing to the health issue and seek to correct them using food, lifestyle changes and carefully managed supplements. I am registered with our governing body ANTA, fully insured and covered by many private health funds. I am committed to ongoing professional development, and have completed several post-graduate courses in sports nutrition, gut health and metabolic diseases.

I believe that there is a balance between optimising health and enjoying life. I always work with my patients in realistic and practical ways that both address their needs and their lifestyle. I support you with coaching to help you identify habits and beliefs that are getting in your way

If you have a diagnosed condition, I will happily work with your GP or medical team. For some serious medical conditions, nutrition is just part of the puzzle, and while it can be extremely effective, I believe a collaborative approach is best alongside medications and medical treatments.

Whatever your issues around diet, health and nutrition, we can work together to find a personalised diet solution that works for you.

"It’s a scary thing trying to get help, but Catharine helped me identify my health priorities and showed me a clear route to improving my digestion while increasing the variety of food I could tolerate."
