Thrive after 40

We all know that life begins at 40. But as many of my patients show, this decade brings some new health challenges. While paying attention to diet and lifestyle is a great place to start, there are several key changes that mean we need to work smarter, not necessarily harder, at maintaining great health.

Almost every day people tell me they eat well, but still have niggling health issues. These might be poor energy, digestive issues, weight gain or low mood. They follow all the mainstream dietary advice and trends but things aren’t getting better and frustration sets in.

40+ bodies, particularly female ones, undergo huge hormonal changes during this decade and even if menopause feels a long way off it is likely that the journey is beginning. Our oestrogen reduces throughout our 40s, which makes us less sensitive to insulin. This means even if we have the energy (sugars) in our body, they aren’t reaching the cells to help us feel energetic. This energy stays in our bloodstream until it reaches the liver where it is quickly stored around the abdomen as fat. Why around the abdomen? Because the body thinks it is starved of energy, so the liver shuttles it to the quickest storage sites for quick release when needed. nutritionist northern beaches

There are of course many other issues at this lifestage. The huge stress of careers, ageing parents, growing children and health diagnoses can also impact sleep, which in turn affects our immune system, appetite and digestion. weight loss program
